In case you encountered a Stamford baby skunk, they will appear helpless. You are probably at lost on what to do with them. Normally, a baby skunk that is wandering around will not be a source of major concern. Wait for an hour or two and the mother skunk will retrieve it. However, if it has been out of its burrow for a longer period, then it may be an orphaned baby skunk. Without their mother skunk, the kits will find it hard to survive.

What to Do If You Encountered an Orphaned Baby Skunk

Once you are sure that the Connecticut baby skunk has indeed been abandoned, it is highly likely that it will have littermates that also require your assistance. Be sure that you will keep checking the den for at least a week. After recovering all the kits, it is essential to inform the local rehabilitators or the veterinarians. They can provide them with better care. You should not attempt to rehabilitate them on your own. In addition, keeping them as a pet would be illegal. 

Feeding the Stamford Baby Skunk

Usually we do not recommend individuals without experience and knowledge to feed the Connecticut baby skunk. Even rehydrating them can be a tough task. If you need to rehydrate them, Pedialyte would be an excellent choice. It should first be heated in order to match the body temperature of the baby skunk. It should then be given to the baby skunk every couple of hours. You should never feed a baby that is experiencing chills. This will be harmful to them since they will not be capable to digest the liquid. When giving them with Pedialyte using a syringe, make sure that the baby is swallowing it. Do not force-feed them since they may accidentally inhale the liquid.  

Keeping them Warm

While waiting for the wildlife rehabilitators to come, you will need to keep the baby warm or they may die. Keep them contained in a cardboard box, place it in the dim areas of your house to keep the babies calm. If you have a heating pad, you may use this to maintain their ideal temperature but be sure that they will not be directly in contact with the source of heat. As an alternative, you can fill up an empty bottle with warm water. Cover it with a towel before placing it inside the cardboard box.

What If It Ingested Too Much Pedialyte?

Since you are not in total control, there are instance when the Connecticut baby skunk will swallow too fast. During this time, you will have to stop the feeding process. Turn the skunk upside down and gently pat them on their back. This will cause them to sneeze that will allow you to wipe the excess liquid that came out of their nose. This should be repeated for around 5 minutes or until they already stop sneezing.

Proper care is needed to raise the chance that the Stamford baby skunk will survive without their mother skunk. This is why we always encourage you to seek the help of the rehabilitators that are better equipped compared to you.
